I realized that there is one thing I could blog about that might be of interest to others along with something I would like to share. The topic is the Geary Theatre. We often think of this facility as our home and many of us consider it an important part of our current or past existence. It is a sanctuary of opportunity, disappointment, extreme joy and frustration. Yes it is a place we have grownup in, played in, and created great memories.
As may of you know there has now for many years been talk of replacing the Geary. I hope with this blog to keep a running dialog of the information shared with me which can be made public. I want to try and keep the truth separated from the rumor which at times is impossible. However, when I learn of news which can be shared I will try and share it with all of you. I will also try and correct any errors or clear up rumors when I learn that the facts were incorrect or when circumstances change the direction.
Please keep in mind that I am not a sit on the computer guy who will be posting every day. I hope to share information which will bring light to the changes with the Geary and the USU/CEU Theatre program when I have something new to add to the conversation.
So let me give you a little background as to what gave me this blog idea in the first place and perhaps this will help you all understand why I am trying this new medium.
Last night I received a call from Scott about a new leak in the Geary Theatre which had set off the fire alarm and how he let the fire department in to investigate. Well apparently the Skylight in the Womens restroom are had been leaking and filled the detector with water. No big deal it is just another ceiling about to fall in. I haven't been there yet to assess the damage myself, but I thought it is interesting that our old home has been so poorly cared over the years it is truly beginning to crumble around us. (OK that may be an exaggeration but only slightly.) For several years now we have been working to replace the Geary Theatre with a new space and every time we are placed on the back of the list. We have even been moved back by our own institution in order to support a cheaper facility that might get funded. This is the politics of brick and mortar.
So I thought that perhaps you all would like to know all the happenings around the Geary, what falls in what sparks, what is falling apart and what is being done by us, the administration, the University, and the state.
Let me know if your interested. I believe this saga has been going on now for at least 15 years if not more. It is now time to document it from the perspective of the ones who use the space every day and live with the ups and downs of promises, broken promises, and the realities of political pressures verses needs and safety. Perhaps with the merger we will be even more removed from our interest in achieving this reality. I certainly hope not.
In my next rambling I hope to bring to you a somewhat brief history of the past events which have left us so cynical and at the same time hopeful for an upgrade.
